Trump Admits 'Unknown Territory' Awaits in Kim Summit”

North Korea's Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump arrived in the tropical city-state on Sunday for the first ever face-to-face meeting by leaders of two countries that have been enemies since the 1950-1953 Korean War.

Washington is demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearistion (CVID) of North Korea. "If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase". He said that those talks "in fact are moving quite rapidly and will come to a logical conclusion more quickly than anticipated".

If April's Inter-Korea Summit was the crack in the dam holding the world back from Pyongyang, Tuesday's Trump-Kim meeting could potentially represent the total collapse of the dam that brings the world surging towards North Korea.

South Korea's president on Monday welcomed the upcoming Singapore summit as a "historic milestone" to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but noted that Seoul must be part of any future negotiations with the North, which could take years.

Since then, US and North Korean diplomats have been trying to bridge the gap between the two countries' definition of denuclearization.

The president was being accompanied on his trip to the Far East by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has visited Pyongyang twice to prepare for the summit, and national security adviser John Bolton, a hardliner on dealing with North Korea.

He told Lee "we have a very interesting meeting tomorrow and I think things can work out very nicely".

A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. side was entering the talks with a sense of optimism and an equal dose of scepticism given North Korea's long history of developing nuclear weapons.

He also thanked his Singapore hosts for their hospitality.

Korean Studies Institute director David Kang said: "The most we can hope to get out of this is that Kim and Trump find that they can have some working relationship".

Hundreds of North Korean security experts have no doubt been up nights wondering how to safeguard Kim Jong Un since Trump shocked the world by accepting the North's invitation to meet.

At a press conference earlier on Sunday, Loong said that the summit cost approximately $20 million, which is a price the Singapore was "willing to pay".

The unraveling of the Canada summit meeting increases the North Korean leader's incentive to "up his asks and limit his compromises and for Trump to do the opposite", Richard Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter, adding, "Hardly the ideal context".

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said.

But he has since lowered expectations, backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

North Korea's willingness to develop fuel and weapons in secret, to sell nuclear technology and missiles to other rogue states, and its attempts to use its status as a nuclear power as a negotiating tool are features, not bugs, of its defence and foreign policy.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has.
