Trump forecasts 'nice' outcome from Kim summit”

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, June 11, 2018, in Singapore. Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour- joined only by translators.

Some analysts said a Kim commitment to specific negotiations on denuclearisation could well be enough for Tuesday's summit to be a success.

The most common prediction that most publications made was, ironically, the unpredictability of the outcome of the Trump-Kim summit, given how both leaders tend to be mavericks.

The summit will be the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president.

Pompeo says USA sanctions on the North will remain in place until the North denuclearizes, but he has warned that if diplomacy fails to move in the right direction, the sanctions "will increase".

The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on his way back to Washington.

During a sendoff ceremony at Pyongyang International Airport, Kim boarded a Chinese plane provided for his personal use after greeting senior officials who came to bid him farewell, KCNA reported.

This is a very high bar and probably unrealistic after one meeting. "No president has ever put America in a position where the North Korean leadership thought that this was truly possible".

There was no word on how Trump was spending the night before the summit.

It was Kim's only foray on Monday outside of the St. Regis hotel, where he's been staying since his arrival a day earlier. Both leaders are set to meet at Capella, which is on Sentosa, Singapore's resort island.

Over the next few days, The Drum will bring you the latest on the summit with an industry perspective. After his premature departure from Quebec, he continued to tweet angrily at Trudeau from Singapore, saying Monday, "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal". Trump seemed to be working actively to define expectations downward following an Oval Office meeting last month with North Korean vice chairman Kim Yong Chol.

While in Singapore, security is a top concern for Kim, whose 3,000-mile journey to the Southeast Asian city-state is the farthest he's traveled as leader of North Korea.

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation.

"We will have to provide security assurances, to be sure", Pompeo said on Fox News Sunday. "If they don't denuclearize, that will not be acceptable".

"They may be able to pull rabbits out of a hat that the rest of us conventional diplomats would not have been able to do", he said.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has. I think that very quickly I'll know whether or not something good is going to happen. "That's what I do".
