United Airlines flight diverted to Ireland due to 'security concern'”

A United Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Shannon, Ireland on Monday after a bomb threat was found on board.

A United Airlines flight from Rome to Chicago was diverted to an airport in Ireland Monday after the crew learned of a potential security threat onboard, authorities said.

The passengers were in the process of being searched, he said in an emailed statement.

A United Airlines Boeing 737-900ER plane takes off from Los Angeles International airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, California, U.S. March 28, 2018.

Upon being diverted, passengers disembarked the aircraft to be searched.

No further details were made available.

The crew are believed to have discovered a bomb warning written in the toilet, necessitating a diversion to Shannon, where it landed at 1.42pm.

"We will work to get customers on their way to Chicago as quickly as possible", the company said. Handwriting on the note was reportedly being analysed to see if it matched with similar threatening notes found on other airplanes, according to Reuters.

The airline said on Twitter that the flight was now canceled and would depart for Chicago on Tuesday.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed to Independent.ie that no suspicious device was found, but that investigations are still underway.
