‘Aeon Flux’ Live-Action Reboot In Development At MTV

‘Aeon Flux’ Live-Action Reboot In Development At MTV”

This time around, it'll be all about the police state, "biohacking", and superheroics as the heroine becomes the legendary Aeon Flux. The cult series first aired on MTV as an experimental animated series in 1991, and was later adapted into a 2005 feature film starring Charlize Theron. Jeff Davis (showrunner of movie reboot Teen Wolf) will be writing the drama as well as executive producing alongside The Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd (who also produced the film version).

Released back on MTV in the Liquid Television days, Aeon Flux was an animated series that was full of violence, sex, and all around weirdness. Hurd, who produced the live-action Aeon Flux film in 2005, will also serve as an executive producer. Chung's animated series was groundbreaking stuff, seemingly building upon the thematic focus of the renegade animation found in efforts like 1981's Heavy Metal, except put through a stylised cyberpunk lens that - in 1991 - was considered mind-blowing. In 1995, it yet again returned for 10 half-hour episodes. It also had a live-action movie, but we don't talk about that. Though the film bombed hard at the box office and got roasted like chestnuts over an open fire by critics, MTV tapping Hurd to help usher the property to the small screen might be a wise choice, as she can likely use her insider knowledge of what went wrong to prevent the live-action series from suffering the same fate. The film grossed $52.3 million globally, falling short of its $62 million production budget.

There is no indication yet as to whether or not original series creator Peter Chung, who went on to work on The Animatrix and Rugrats, will be involved in this live-action reboot, or if any of the creative team from the live-action reboot will return, such as director Karyn Kusama and writers Phil Hay and Matt Mandredi. The first few seasons of Teen Wolf were actually quite good, and set up the supernatural series to be this generation's answer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
