Australia says end to South Korea-US war games not a certainty”

"Singapore, the country of the epoch-making meeting much awaited by the whole world, was awash with thousands of domestic and foreign journalists and a large crowd of masses to see this day's moment which will remain long in history", KCNA noted.

Conservative House Republicans were unrepentant in their praise for the president for engaging with North Korea, a sharp reversal from many of their views on similar negotiations between President Barack Obama's Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran.

In its first report on the landmark summit, the official KCNA news agency ran a glowing dispatch on the talks, describing them as an "epoch-making meeting" that would help foster "a radical switchover in the most hostile (North Korea)-US relations".

"The Pentagon didn't know this was coming", Dr Green said.

White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert speaks about the situation in Texas, during a news briefing at the White House on August 31, 2017. "The bad news is that the hard decisions now need to be made on a relatively tight timeline". When asked why, Trump said on Tuesday: "Because there's no time".

After months of speculation and threats, Trump on Tuesday met Kim Jong-un on Singapore's Sentosa island. It committed North Korea to accept worldwide inspections and stay in the non-proliferation treaty, under which its pursuit of a nuclear bomb was illegal.

The agreement provides very vague concepts for a new US-DPRK relationship - one that will without a doubt also change the nature of balance and geopolitics in East Asia and relationships with other regional actors such as South Korea, Russia, China and Japan.

It was not immediately clear whether the freeze represents a major concession or not.

The reported agreement, if confirmed by the United States, could be considered as a concession by Trump because US officials had called for the North to take swift disarmament measures before getting major outside concessions and benefits.

She said the global community was at the beginning of a very long process: "The detail is still to be worked through".

Mr. DeTrani, meanwhile, highlighted the overall progress at hand.

"We have a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely", Trump said as he began the working lunch.

But the South Carolina Republican said Trump would face opposition to any move to withdraw American forces from South Korea.

How did South Korea react?

Mr Trump said he urged Mr Kim and other North Korean officials to watch a four-minute video produced before the Singapore summit. But peace has a cost and, given the current USA narrative that seeks to avoid foreign entanglement and is fed up with spending money on worldwide commitments, it will require the United States to manage its shaky alliances if this is to be a realistic prospect. "I'm not trying to unify South Korea and North Korea".

"Yeah, he's de-nuking, I mean he's de-nuking the whole place".

The United States has conducted such exercises for decades as a symbol of unity with Seoul and previously rejected North Korean complaints as illegitimate.

More broadly, Mr. Yun said he was "quite surprised" at the lack of a more specific commitment on denuclearization from the North Korean side.

"We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks", Pompeo said yesterday evening. "There were obstacles but we overcame them to be here".
