Crawford stops Horn to seize WBO welterweight world title

Crawford stops Horn to seize WBO welterweight world title”

Crawford, who trains out of Colorado Springs, came out immediately in the southpaw stance, and caught Horn (18-1-1, 12 KO's) with a straight left hand that knocked the reigning WBO champion off balance.

Horn has struggled to make weight previously but his camp was supremely confident about his preparation, saying he was in the best shape of his life and woke up needing to lose only 1kg on Saturday.

"The horsehair gloves definitely make it a more risky fight, " said Horn, who has undergone intense martial arts exercises to make his fists rock hard in readiness to use them. "Look what I just did" Crawford said afterwards. These things happen. I could have kept him guessing more. Crawford followed up the knockdown with more flurries in the ninth round until referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight with 27 seconds remaining in the round, awarding Crawford the win.

He says Crawford, who has come up in weight after being world champ at 61kg and 63.5kg had grown stronger but retained his speed at welterweight.

"That's by getting in without getting hit, bullying him around, doing what he done to (Manny) Pacquiao". Horn, who suffered a small cut over his right eye in the fourth round, had no answers for anything, and it didn't get much better.

Crawford will use this momentum to fight the best in the division.

"I think they think I'm a bit mentally weaker than I actually am. Now, I want all the champions at welterweight".

The sixth round was as close to a winning round that Horn would see, but Crawford continued to serve a shutout by blocking punches and countering with stinging jabs to the face.

"There's more chance of a cut, more chance of a knockdown but I'm the heavier puncher so Crawford should be very anxious". "He reminds me of Sugar Ray Leonard and that is a great compliment because I always thought Leonard was the best", gushed Arum.

"His future is unlimited".

The fight marked the first attempt to attract boxing fans to ESPN's new $4.99 per month app, which allowed them to watch the bout from the MGM Grand Garden.

There will be no controversy this time over the decision for the WBO Welterweight title.

EARLIER: JEFF Horn has suggested his scales were tampered with after initially failing to make the 66.7kg welterweight limit for tomorrow's world title fight with Terence Crawford. He'll fight for the first time Saturday night since he knocked out Namibia's Julius Indongo (22-2, 11 KOs) with a body shot in the third round of their super lightweight title unification fight August 19 at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Jeff Horn insists he left the ring without his head buzzing but admits to hearing voices at stages during his loss to Terence Crawford. "Guys were overweight. It could have went the same way for Crawford".
