Dem lawmakers seek criminal corruption probe of EPA's Pruitt”

Pruitt has also been accused of radically reshaping the EPA rulemaking process and weakening Obama administration efforts to tighten fuel economy standards.

Included as evidence of corruption in Pruitt's agency are payments made to his wife, his directing an EPA staffer to contact a Chick-fil-A executive to open a franchise for his family, and renting an apartment for $50 a day from a lobbyist with influence in the agency.

Kaptur told her committee colleagues that "taxpayers entrust us to spend their money wisely, and I can not imagine there are many of our citizens who think that $130 vanity pens are worthy investments".

"Scott Pruitt can not shift the blame for his scandals to his aides or career EPA employees, said Democratic Representative Don Beyer, a member of the House Natural Resources Committee".

With regard to the Democratic letter, an EPA spokesperson referred requests for comment to Pruitt's outside counsel. "Outside he's being attacked viciously by the press".

Federal ethics codes prohibit having staffers conduct personal errands and bar officials from using their position for private gain.

An EPA spokesperson told the Daily Beast, "EPA will not be commenting on anonymous sources who are working to distract Americans from Administrator Pruitt's accomplishments on regulatory certainty and environmental stewardship".

"H$3 is actions related to his wife's employment and the quid-pro-quo condo situation with industry lobbyists may have crossed a line into criminal conduct punishable by fines or even by time in prison", the lawmakers wrote in the letter.

The Washington Post reported this week that Pruitt asked his EPA scheduler to arrange a meeting a year ago with the chief executive of the restaurant chain Chick-fil-A. "Look, My wife is an entrepreneur herself, I love, she loves, we love Chick-fil-A as a franchise of faith and it's one of the best in the country and that's something we were very excited about and we need more of them in Tulsa and we need more of them across the country".
