Intel: Expect our first discrete GPUs by 2020

Intel: Expect our first discrete GPUs by 2020”

Back in November, the company announced the hiring of Raja Koduri - formerly of AMD - and stated that he would "expand Intel's leading position in integrated graphics for the PC market with high-end discrete graphics solutions for a broad range of computing segments". The company's existing efforts have been focused on offering graphics through Intel's CPU chips, but the performance has been limited.

By 2020 AMD will have a 7nm Navi GPU already on the shelves for a year, and potentially a more powerful refresh of the initial mainstream design ready to roll too.

Moorhead said it'll probably take a "few revisions" of Intel's first GPUs before they become a real threat to AMD and Nvidia's business. We might even have a GTX 1180 from Nvidia by then too. The current codenames for Intel's upcoming GPUs are Arctic Sound and Jupiter Sound, with Raja Koduri focusing on the datacenter and AI at first, but we should expect gaming variants to arrive in the months and years after the initial push from Intel for GPU dominance.

The announcement from Krzanich came during an analyst event in early June, though whether the specific 2020 chip he was referencing is going to be the first gaming, AI, or data centre GPU we're not sure.

The discrete GPU market has always been dominated by Nvidia and AMD, but the incumbents could face more competition if Intel's discrete GPU plans succeed under Koduri. With Intel creating its own line of GPUs, gamers should have more choice when it comes to buying the best graphics card for their rigs.

But the hardware is only one side of the argument - software, the drivers, are equally important in making sure that your GPU and your games play nicely together. As further confirmation of this timeline and ambition, Intel's official Twitter news channel shared the Tweet you can see below.

Intel isn't saying anything else about the GPU at this time.

For now, we'll have to wait and see what CES 2019 brings us.
