Ivanka Trump's Proverb Leaves Chinese Internet Users Puzzled

Ivanka Trump's Proverb Leaves Chinese Internet Users Puzzled”

Ahead of her father's historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, Ivanka Trump has tweeted out an important piece of wisdom from an ancient Chinese sage: "Those who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those doing it".

Asian Twitter couldn't resist having a little fun after reading an Ivanka Trump tweet that she described as a "Chinese Proverb". A pseudo-Confucian version was fabricated in 1962 - perhaps explaining why Ms Trump believed it was a Chinese proverb.

Her tweet came on the eve of the day when her father, Donald Trump, met the North Korean leader at Capella Hotel in Singapore's Sentosa Island to hold talks, in a bid to resolve the decades-long nuclear stand-off between the two countries.

People on the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo attempted to come up with a list of real Chinese proverbs that might match what Trump was trying to say.

"One proverb from Ivanka has exhausted the brain cells of all Chinese internet users", a commenter admitted.

"Actually Western people like to make up Chinese proverbs, like us, as we Chinese people also make up lots of those", said a diplomatic user on Weibo.

Website Quote Investigator, which suggested it originated at the turn of the 20th century in the United States, pointed out variations of the quote coming from different sources, such as Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, American writer Elbert Hubbard, humor magazine "Puck", and Saxby's Magazine, among others.

"[My editor] really can't think of what exactly this proverb is".

She hired a Chinese-speaking nanny to tutor her daughter.

One of the users also tweeted, "It makes sense, but I still don't know which proverb it is", and while yet another user's post read, "She saw it in a fortune cookie at Panda Express", AFP reported.

However, he added: 'But why are Trump WH (White House) aides giving our proverbs to China, increasing our proverb deficit?.

"If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts", she wrote, attributing the quote to Einstein, before quickly being informed by other Twitter users that this was not an Einstein quote.
