Mother issues warning after MS girl diagnosed with ‘tick paralysis’”

Kailyn Griffin, 5, temporarily lost the ability to walk because of a tick bite, her mother said in a post on Facebook. "Then I went to do her hair and noticed that she barely talks, and when I combed saw the tick", - said the girl's mother Jessica Griffin.

Jessica Griffin says her daughter couldn't walk after she was bitten by a tick.

After blood work and a CT scan, the child was diagnosed with tick paralysis. PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!

At first, Griffin thought her daughter's legs were just asleep.

Fun and laughter aside, Jessica wants her readers to be aware that tick paralysis is both real and risky.

Tick paralysis is most commonly caused by the American dog tick and the Rocky Mountain wood tick, according to Columbia University's Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases Research Center. The reason? A tick bite. It's more common in children than it is adults! Scary is [an] UNDERSTATEMENT! Ticks are most active from April through September, The Washington Post has reported.

After a female tick feeds for five to seven days, the toxin builds up in a person's system. Paralysis sets in slowly, starting in the legs and spreading into upper body, stopping your breathing if left unchecked.

In 2006, four cases of tick paralysis occurred near each other and within a short period in Colorado, where the state usually receives about one case per year, according to the CDC. The disease usually starts with fatigue and muscle pains.

The paralysis is more common in animals, which are unable to check themselves for the ticks. Girls often have longer hair than boys, which ticks can attach to and hide in, increasing the risk of tick paralysis, the report said. "We are being admitted to the hospital for observation and we're hoping her balance gets straightened out!" she wrote.

The little girl made a full recovery in hospital.

The doctors said the child would return to normal between 12 and 24 hours, and sure enough, after 12 hours, Kailyn was back to her usual self.

The best way to avoid tick bites that can cause disease is to avoid walking through or brushing against vegetation and perform daily self-examinations for ticks. Later that evening, Kailin was able to walk out of the hospital.
