Pre-cut melon recalled after multi-state salmonella outbreak — CDC”

Officials said people reported contracting salmonella after eating pre-cut melon between April 30 and May 28.

Packages of precut melon - including watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew, along with fruit salads that contain those melons - are being recalled from major retailers in eight states.

The CDC, FDA, and public health and regulatory officials in several states are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Adelaide infections in five Midwestern states. The fruit was sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at places like Costco, Trader Joe's, Walmart and Whole Foods/Amazon. The melon was also sold in Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Kroger Co. said customers who purchased the melon from the company's IN and MI store locations should not consume them and return them to a store for a full refund or replacement.

However, it wasn't until Friday that the CDC announced the connection to the multistate outbreak, said Karim Baroudi, Hancock Public Health commissioner.

Kroger announced last week it had removed the affected products from its stores in IN and MI "out of an abundance of caution", and has temporarily suspended shipments of any new products from Caito Foods. "On June 7, 2018, Walmart and Kroger removed pre-cut melon linked to this outbreak from all Walmart, Kroger, Jay C and Payless stores from the affected states".

"Reports of illnesses linked to these products are under investigation, and Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution", the agency said in a statement, adding that it "has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation". Caito's website says the Indianapolis Service Center and Fresh Cut facility is located at 3120 N. Post Road.

Of the 60 victims reported sick, 31 have been hospitalized, but there are zero reported deaths.
