Raptors promote assistant coach Nick Nurse to replace Casey

Raptors promote assistant coach Nick Nurse to replace Casey”

On Tuesday, the Raptors finally made a decision to move forward with Nurse, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, in an effort to get a new lead voice in the locker room but not go through a total staff change given their success developing players and in the regular season.

Nurse succeeds Dwane Casey, who raised expectations even higher than he could meet and got hired.

All three have interesting cases, with Nurse's resume standing as among the most decorated it could be without National Basketball Association head coaching experience, Stackhouse having an incredible first two seasons as a lead coach behind the 905 bench, and Kalamian holding a strong relationship with players and having what would seem to be the proper demeanor for the position.

In charge of the Raptors' offence, Nurse played a pivotal role in successfully reinventing the way the team played last season.

Nurse coached in Europe for 11 years starting in 1996.

Toronto was rumored to desire former Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer, but Bud signed on to coach Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks. Toronto also took the third-most threes in the league, up from 22nd place two seasons ago. The Pistons lured Casey with a five-year deal that was announced Monday. He is the franchise's all-time leader in wins, winning percentage, games coached and playoff games coached (51).

Lewenberg noted that if the Raptors passed on Nurse as head coach, they risked losing him altogether as he finished atop a Yahoo poll from early April among executives that tabbed him as the top head coaching prospect among National Basketball Association assistants.
