Toddlers could be consuming more sugar than recommended for adults, study finds

Toddlers could be consuming more sugar than recommended for adults, study finds”

While the body processes natural and added sugars in the same way, added sugar raises concerns among nutritionists because it often replaces necessary nutrients in the diet.

Added sugar consumption starts for many before their first birthday and increases with age as toddlers between the ages of 19 and 23 months are consuming on average more than 7 teaspoons of added sugar a day.

The study analyzed data from more than 800 infants and toddlers between 6 and 23 months old in the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey research study.

Another serious situation shapes up in the USA, as a recent study carried out by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed an increasingly higher added sugar consumption in toddlers. The children were aged between 6 and 23 months.

The researchers pointed out that toddlers really should be getting sugar from fruits and vegetables, not from foods with added sugar. While 60 percent of those between the ages of 6 and 11 months old were found to eat added sugar on a given day.

According to both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, children under the age of 2 shouldn't consume foods or drinks with added sugars at all. "Our results show that added sugar consumption begins early in life and exceeds current recommendations". Added sugar consumption was highest among non-Hispanic black children and lowest among non-Hispanic white children in kids aged between 12 and 23 months.

Consuming a high amount of sugar is linked to high levels of cavities, asthma, obesity as well as risk of cardiovascular diseases later on life.

Herrick said the findings could have implications for the upcoming revision of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. She presented the findings on Sunday 10 June at Nutrition 2018, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition held in Boston.

Herrick said the best way to cut sugar from the diets of children and adults is to "choose foods that you know don't have them, like fresh fruits and vegetables".

Ready-to-eat cereals, bakery items, sugar-sweetened beverages, yogurt, and candy can be major sources of added sugar. However soon to be developed is the 2020-2025 edition that will outline the recommended amounts of sugars and fats children under 2 should consume. She said that future studies are aiming at looking at the types of foods that are contributing to the excess sugar intake in kids as well.
