Toronto Raptors to promote assistant Nick Nurse to head coach

Toronto Raptors to promote assistant Nick Nurse to head coach”

The chance he's long coveted has finally arrived.

The Toronto Raptors had the best regular season in franchise history this year, but after LeBron dealt them yet another postseason beatdown, the franchise elected to fire coach Dwane Casey.

Nurse and the Raptors were completing contract terms on Tuesday, according to the person who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced.

Updating an item from yesterday that suggested the Toronto Raptors had narrowed their head coaching search down to two candidates, Marc Stein of the New York Times reports that the "growing expectation" in coaching circles is that Nick Nurse is the choice. ESPN first reported the hiring.

Nurse, who is from Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, also coached in the D-League, winning championships in 2011 with the Iowa Energy and in 2013 with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

How will Nick Nurse help the Raptors in 2018-19?

Casey, meanwhile, has already found his next job: with the Detroit Pistons.

"I've learned a lot about preparation from him, the seriousness of attention to detail", Nurse told Canada's Sportsnet in February. We have to prepare the players and can't leave any stone unturned.

Nurse, 50, has been coaching for 30 years, succeeding at every level along the way.
