Trump vents anger on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, European Union and Canada's Trudeau”

Trudeau, at a press conference at the end of the summit, had announced that Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the US would go into effect July 1.

The Trump administration recently slapped tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, prompting dollar-for-dollar retaliatory action from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government.

Navarro now regrets the "inappropriate" language he used, he admitted at a Wall Street Journal event on Tuesday.

Navarro came under scrutiny Sunday for bashing Trudeau after the prime minister criticized Trump in the wake of the G-7 summit held in Canada.

Not all US officials have joined Messrs.

"I know at times it all just seems to just churn here, but in fact, steady as we go", Mattis said.

The communique - which had appeared to have papered over the cracks that surfaced at the summit - said the leaders of the US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.

On Trump's handling of trade - where the populist president has taken major steps to enact his economic nationalist agenda - almost 80 percent of Republican voters said they approve of trade actions thus far.

Both aides accused Trudeau of betraying Trump when he gave a news conference after the U.S. president had departed.

"We are being taken advantage of by virtually every one of those countries", Trump told a news conference on Tuesday.

"I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau", Trump told the crowd.

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", he said.

Trump added that Trudeau's statements would "cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

Navarro on Sunday joined administration officials in lashing out at Trudeau following the chaotic end to the G7 summit in Quebec where leaders of the world's major economies clashed over tariffs. China has vowed to retaliate and said further negotiations over trade with the USA will be impossible if the tariffs are implemented.

Former Conservative cabinet minister James Moore, a member of the government's advisory group on NAFTA, hailed Trudeau's approach, refusing to react to "the noise, the bluster, the Twitter, the emotional outbursts".

"We've got to look at what supports are available to ensure that if their jobs, their livelihoods are compromised, what can the government do to support these folks".
