WH adviser Navarro apologizes for 'special place in hell' slam at Trudeau

WH adviser Navarro apologizes for 'special place in hell' slam at Trudeau”

He was asked why he was jeopardizing relations with long-standing allies like Canada while welcoming a historical USA enemy with open arms as a friend.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has apologized for saying that there was a "special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after Trudeau announced that Canada would be slapping "equivalent tariffs" on the United States.

The admission was a rare act of contrition from US President Donald Trump's White House, where public apologies are few. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did", said Navarro, referring to the joint press conference that is routinely held at the end of the annual events.

Peter Navarro is President Donald Trump's National Trade Council adviser.

"The problem was that in conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate", he said.

Before flying to Singapore, Mr. Trump was in Canada for the G-7 summit with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K. All seven leaders had worked out a joint statement stressing the importance of a rules-based global trading system.

In striking such a hostile tone against one of the oldest and closest US allies, Navarro said Tuesday he was emboldened to send a "strong signal of strength" on the eve of the landmark summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada.

People speculated that the Trump administration wanted to make an example of Trudeau as a warning to Kim Jong-un about post-summit reversals, which is a unusual way to treat an ally and key trading partner if true.

Scaramucci went on to say that Trump has great respect for Trudeau, likes him personally and thinks he is an effective leader - and that Canadians shouldn't read too much into Trump's personal attacks.

"Canadians. stood shoulder-to-shoulder with American soldiers in far-off lands in conflicts from the First World War onward", Trudeau said Saturday at a press conference, The Washington Post reported. Ottawa says it is discussing how it could help steel and aluminum workers affected by the recent imposition of US tariffs.

And it concludes with a direct shot at Trump, calling on the House to "reject disparaging and ad hominem statements by usa officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations and work against efforts to resolve this trade dispute". He called on Trudeau to apologise to Trump. He's railed many times in recent days against Canadian import duties of 270 percent on dairy.

Photos taken just 48 hours apart hint at President Donald Trump's feelings during meetings with global leaders. After facing harsh attacks on his character and leadership from the US president and his aides, Americans are coming out online to let the Canadian PM know that their president doesn't speak for them. Meanwhile the Canadian tariff only affects 5-6 per cent of US steel production since the USA exports only about 12 per cent of the steel it produces (one-half to Canada).

Not all USA officials have joined Messrs.

It's not clear what new costs to Canada Trump was referring to in Singapore.

Earlier on Tuesday at the Washington conference, White House Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Kevin Hassett said the USA and Canada need to "take a deep breath". It has imposed new tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and lumber, is considering tariffs on cars and is seeking a rewrite of Nafta. We have a big trade deficit with Canada.

The northern nation is trying to pivot away from the US, but it's not easy. The prime minister is also nationalizing a pipeline to reduce reliance on American buyers.
