Kim Jong-un's Flight to Singapore a Precision Maneuver

Kim Jong-un's Flight to Singapore a Precision Maneuver”

North Korean and U.S. negotiators met in Singapore Monday for final preparations on the eve of an unprecedented summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump, seeking to bridge the gaps over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

Former U.S. National Basketball Association star Dennis Rodman arrived in Singapore on Tuesday ahead of a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying he was "happy to be here".

US and North Korean officials huddled throughout Monday at the Ritz-Carlton hotel ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

U.S. and North Korean negotiators met in a Singapore hotel on Monday, seeking to clarify the shape of Tuesday's summit, where Trump has said he intends to guided by instinct.

According to accounts of the G-7 meeting, officials from other members of the bloc confronted Trump with a torrent of statistics about the importance of the US -authored global order and the merits of free trade.

Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Pompeo told reporters that the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".

The Trump-Kim summit is expected to cost about S$20 million ($15 million), Lee told Singaporean media on Sunday, with security costs representing about half the total.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the United States and the North.

Trump said last week that Rodman had not been invited to Singapore. It's a reflection of the intense global curiosity over Kim's sudden turn to diplomacy in recent months after a slew of North Korean nuclear and missile tests previous year raised serious fears of war. Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korean War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty.

But the South's Winter Olympics in February were the catalyst for a flurry of diplomatic moves as South Korea's dovish leader Moon Jae-in sought to bring the two sides together, holding two summits of his own with Kim in the Demilitarized Zone that divides Korea.

It's unclear what Trump and Kim might decide Tuesday.

It was reported that Kim planned to fly back to North Korea in the early afternoon on Thursday, leaving very little time for actual negotiations, although there is still considerable uncertainty about what a deal between the leaders would look like.

It's Kim's pursuit of nuclear weapons that gives his meeting with Trump such high stakes.
