Morocco to bid for 2030 tournament after losing 2026 bid

Morocco to bid for 2030 tournament after losing 2026 bid”

Both the United States and Canada failed to qualify for this year's World Cup.

The joint bid defeated Morocco's application with 134 of the 200 votes cast at the FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

"I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country to continue to work for football and realise one day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco", he said.

The 57-year-old also took issue with Canada and the USA, recalling a proposal ahead of the American-hosted 1994 World Cup from then-FIFA president Joao Havelange that would have split games into quarters to allow for more television commercials. "Our vision is of a world of opportunity for our Candidate Host Cities and for the global football community".

"We've only got three games in the group stage".

For Mexico it's the third time it hosts a World Cup, having done so in 1970, when Brazil was the victor and in 1986, when Argentina and the "hand of God".

By the time the 2026 finals take place, Africa will have hosted just one of 23 World Cups - while Mexico alone will have staged three separate tournaments.

Hosts Russia is also seeded, even though they are the tournament's lowest-placed team - 70th - in FIFA's world rankings.

Morocco's king Mohammed VI has instructed his country to bid to host the 2030 World Cup.

The United bid will, however, be of huge appeal to the Federation Internationale de Football Association bean-counters as the bid team claims the ability to generate a projected profit of more than £8 billion for the governing body.

The North America bid also had to overcome concerns about the impact of policies from the Trump administration, including attempts to implement a ban on travel by residents of six majority-Muslim countries.

First time in the history of world cup VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system would be used. "Ahead of a competition as important as the World Cup, the entire focus should be on it. Rumors shouldn't matter".

That means the capital's iconic stadium, Estadio Azteca, is nearly certain to feature on day one and become the only arena in the world to host matches in three different world cups.
