Georgia woman killed rabid bobcat with bare hands

Georgia woman killed rabid bobcat with bare hands”

A Georgia grandmother was stepping outside her home to take a picture when she was attacked by a rabid bobcat.

DeDe Phillips was walking to her truck on June 7 when she heard a neighbor's dog barking and spotted a bobcat by one of her vehicles. "I started praying, don't let her come to the door", Phillips told WGCL-TV.

She grabbed the cat by its throat and didn't let go. She was attacked in her driveway as her 5-year-old granddaughter slept inside.

Last Thursday, Phillips says she walked outside her Hart County, Georgia home and saw a bobcat under her SUV.

Due to the encounter, Phillips suffered broken fingers on both her hands and cuts and bruises all over her body. Authorities found out it was rabid and burned the blood left in her front yard.

The almost 40-pound animal jumped five feet and landed on her chest, and started attacking her face.

"As he starts towards me, I threw my phone and he went mid-air and just about knocked me down", she said. At that leap, Phillips said it was a fight for her life. She then began struggling for her life but trying not to scream.

The daughter-in-law of a bobcat trapper, Phillips knew she was dealing with a lethal animal - and needed to act fast.

Now, she must get a painful and expensive series of shots to keep her from contracting the disease.

The newspaper reported that Phillips' son used a knife to stab the animal and make sure it was dead.

Phillips' cousin has launched a fundraising effort to help her pay for the medical expenses which has already raised more than $26,000 as of Sunday night.
