World Health Organization Officially Lists Gaming Addiction as Disorder”

People who compulsively play video games could soon be diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

The World Health Organization says classifying "Gaming Disorder" as a separate condition will "serve a public health objective for countries to be better prepared to identify this issue".

He guessed that the percentage of video game players with a compulsive problem was likely to be extremely small - much less than 1 percent - and that many such people would likely have other underlying problems, like depression, bipolar disorder or autism.

With millions of gamers around the world anxious that they now have a "mental health disorder", the WHO claims that it hardly effects only 2-3% of their population. One, that the gaming behaviour takes precedence over other activities to the extent that other activities are pushed to the periphery. Gaming disorder has been added to the section on mental and addictive disorders because demand for services to tackle this condition has been growing.

World Health Organization said the ICD team received more than 10,000 proposed revisions for the newest edition of the document.

The proposed disorder falls under the category of substance abuse or addictive behaviors, which reads: "Disorders due to substance use and addictive behaviours are mental and behavioural disorders that develop as a result of the use of predominantly psychoactive substances, including medications, or specific repetitive rewarding and reinforcing behaviours".

It's no wonder that such a decision has received significant flaks not only from video gaming companies and gamers but also from mental health professionals.

The classification of gaming disorder as a disease follows the hospitalization and rehabilitation of a 9-year-old girl from the United Kingdom who became addicted to "Fortnite" and would not stop playing to use the bathroom.

"Nonetheless, gaming disorder can be very harmful and not something people can easily get over on their own, but with the right treatment they can". It has been prospected that engaging in such games lead to potentially violent or antisocial behavior.

The International Classification of Diseases was last revised 28 years ago.

Brendan Kelly, professor of psychiatry from the Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, was also among those who welcomed the decision by the World Health Organization to classify gaming addiction as a mental disorder.

'Be on the lookout, ' he said, noting that concerns should be raised if the gaming habit appears to be taking over. Responding to the move, Dr. Petros Levounis of the Jersey Medial School Department of Psychiatry said that the recognition would help the medical field to be more comprehensive in providing solutions to common and emergent medical health conditions.

So the World Health Organization puts "gaming disorder" on a list.

The classification is aimed at alerting health professionals and systems to the existence of this condition and ensuring that people suffering from these conditions can get appropriate help.

He added it's also a place where you can meet friends online and develop relationships.
