Atul Gawande picked as CEO of Amazon, Berkshire health care company”

Eminent Indian-American surgeon, writer and public health innovator Atul Gawande has been named as the CEO of a new USA employee health care company, a joint venture between Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase, the three American majors announced today.

On Wednesday, the three companies announced they had chosen a leader, and a city, for their new initiative: Dr. Atul Gawande, in Boston.

The companies also clarified that the new venture is indeed a company, not a nonprofit as some had thought.

The companies have released few details about the new venture but it will be independent and "free from profit-making incentives and constraints", the companies said in a statement. Amazon, Berkshire and JPMorgan collectively employ more than 1 million people.

In addition to his work as a surgeon and endocrinologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Gawande writes regularly for The New Yorker and has published several books, including Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto, and Being Mortal. Many patients, especially the sickest, struggle with that. "I have devoted my public health career to building scalable solutions for better healthcare delivery that are saving lives, reducing suffering, and eliminating wasteful spending both in the USA and across the world", said Gawande.

"The choice suggests that the. coalition is looking not at the drug value chain in isolation, but more broadly at the overall healthcare system across payers and providers of care delivery", Leerink Partners analyst Ana Gupte said in a note.

Gawande was not immediately available for an interview, according to the Brigham.

Amazon, JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway announced in February that they were teaming up to form a health care company that aims to increase transparency and cut costs for their employees. And they're going with a Renaissance man.

Meanwhile, healthcare companies are embarking on a wave of unconventional deals to broaden the services they offer. Buffett has said his ambitions are larger. He added that he hopes "we could find a way where perhaps better care could be delivered even at somewhat lesser cost".

Leaders of the three companies have said little about how their venture plans to tackle this problem, but they have noted that it will take time to figure out solutions, a point they emphasized again on Wednesday.
