NASA Mars Rover captures incredible selfie as dust storm sweeps Red Planet”

According to NASA, that's when Mars and the Earth are closest to each other while they orbit around the sun.

In a new development, it is good news for the stargazers who can see the Mars in the night sky, and it will occur in some few weeks, as per NASA.

This year the two planets won't get quite as cozy. The red planet is expected to appear at its brightest in the sky on the morning of July 31.

While the two planets' orbits are next to each other, their journeys along their respective orbits can make the distance between the Earth and Mars very different.

As regarding the dust storm on Mars, "the storm is one of the most intense ever observed on the Red Planet, (...) it covered more than 41 million square kilometers, about the area of North America and Russian Federation combined", declared NASA. This will happen because the planet will get really close to Earth and it is the first time it reaches this distance ever since 2003.

According to Dean Regasa (Dean Regas), astronomer from the Cincinnati Observatory, Mars will be easily visible to the naked eye.

"2017 was one of the off-years, but, in 2018, we'll have a grand view of Mars - best since 2003".

While NASA was at pains to explain that it has not discovered life on Mars, the organic molecules could provide vital clues. It'll be much brighter than any star, brighter than Jupiter, almost as bright as Venus.

The two planets are at their closest during the rare occasion when they're in "perihelic opposition" with each other, which is when Earth is directly in between Mars and the sun.

"The storm is one of the most intense ever observed on the Red Planet", NASA said in a statement last week. The orbit of planet is not a ideal circle, it is actually follows an elliptical path.

Why The Minimum Distance Between Mars And Earth Keeps Changing?

It is expected to be brightest in the hours before sunrise of Tuesday, July 31.

"Although Mars is closest to Earth at the end of July, you will be able to spot it every night for several months", he adds.
