Poisonous plant that causes blisters and scars spreading across the south

Poisonous plant that causes blisters and scars spreading across the south”

Since then, the plant has become established in NY state, which has felled more than 6.3 million hogweed plants, and other locations in the Northeast.

The risky plant also grows in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

"Giant Hogweed is a Tier 1 Noxious Weed in Virginia and should be reported to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services". The plant can grow up to up to 14 feet, creating a lot of shade in the area and inhibiting the growth of native species.

Giant hogweed is native to Central and Southeast Asia.

"The sap contains chemicals that are activated by sunlight", Metzgar said.

Metzgar recently helped identify a patch of giant hogweed in Berryville, Va.

According to the Department of Ecological Conservation, the toxic plant can also be found in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, North Carolina, Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Virginia, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and parts of West Virginia. In extreme case, it can cause blindness.

"Immediately wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and keep the area away from sunlight for 48 hours, the agency recommends."

According to state's Department of Environmental Conservation, the giant hogweed is risky, an invasive weed that has been recently spotted spreading across ny. Compresses soaked in an aluminum acetate mixture - available at pharmacies - can provide relief for skin irritations. "This seems to be an isolated incident", Michael Flessner, an assistant professor and extension weed science specialist at Virginia Tech, said in a statement. And if the sap gets in your eyes, rinse them out as soon as you can, put on sunglasses and call your doctor.

Should one touch giant hogweed sap, it's not quite as bad as touching the acidic blood of the titular creatures in the "Alien" franchise.

A report from weather.com will have you sit up pretty quickly because this plant could lead to serious injury.
