The theme of International Yoga Day 2018: Yoga for peace”

While it might be hard to believe, it is a fact that religiously practicing yoga is extremely beneficial for your heart and lungs as it causes the organs to rhythmically expand and contract, helping them remain in a healthy condition, India Today reported.

Yoga has the power to unite individuals, society, country and the world at large, and has emerged as a major unifying force globally, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi while leading the International Yoga Day celebrations in Dheradun of Uttarakhand.

Yoga became known in the West towards the end of the 19th century as it was undergoing a major revival in India under the Hindu teacher Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902).

The prime minister described Uttarakhand as a sacred land and said it had been the centre of yoga for ages.

Well, the celebrations were not restrained to India only, Eastern naval command staff performed Yoga o board INS Jyothi in the Bay of Bengal off Visakhapatnam.

#07:15 AM: India should be honoured to be "guardians" of yoga: "We should be proud of our culture. It helps in providing a bridge between India and China and bringing people of the two countries together", he said.

"In yoga, we have the ideal solution to the problems we face, either as individuals or in our society", the Prime Minister said. The world has embraced Yoga and glimpses of this can be seen in the manner in which International Day of Yoga has been marked every year.

"From Tokyo to Toronto, from Stockholm to Sao Paulo, Yoga has become a positive influence in the lives of millions", Modi told participants on the lush green lawns.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose proposal for the global event won United Nations approval in 2014, will lead the way, performing his asanas with an expected 60,000 others in the northern town of Dehradun.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who participated in a yoga event in Lucknow, emphasised on Modi's role in popularising yoga around the world. "Instead of increasing suffering, yoga heals", he said. Addressing the large gathering in the backdrop of the iconic British-era building of FRI, Modi said yoga has shown the world the way from "illness to wellness" and enriching lives across the globe.
