World Health Organization officially classifies gaming disorder”

It certainly looks like the disorder is being described by people who are not entirely familiar with video games. WHO's ICD was last updated in 1990 and its new edition, ICD-11, listed gaming disorder as a serious health condition that needs to be monitored.

Gaming disorder is one of many mental health conditions that the WHO that have been changed - they have been simplified and diagnostic descriptions have been added.

The doctor from Cognitive Behavioral Consultants in White Plains says parents should set limits on their children's gaming and seek help when the habit impacts their life away from the game controller.

Continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.

Poznyak said the condition leads to "significant distress and impairment in personal, family, social, educational or occupational functioning".

It may be continuous or episodic and recurrent, but the aspects of the disorder are usually evident for at least 12 months in order to necessitate a diagnosis. "The pattern of gaming is often persists in spite of awareness of increased risk of harm to the individual or to others".

As per Richard, a person can play games for hours, and sit in front of the screen for days, without being addictive.

"Video gaming is like a non-financial kind of gambling from a psychological point of view", said Griffiths, a distinguished professor of behavioural addiction at Nottingham Trent University.

The updated International Classification of Diseases, is scheduled to be presented to World Health Organization member states at their annual assembly in May 2019. "There is not objective evidence to define and diagnose overuse and that may result in misdiagnosis". The eleventh edition of ICD was released on Monday to allow member states time to plan implementation before it is presented for adoption at the 2019 World Health Assembly.

The new ICD-11 is also able to better capture data regarding safety in healthcare, which means that unnecessary events that may harm health - such as unsafe workflows in hospitals - can be identified and reduced, the statement added.

WHO said its early release will allow countries "to plan how to use the new version, prepare translations, and train health professionals all over the country".

While the classification was first proposed back in December of 2017, it was not made official until June 18th and quickly made its rounds across the internet and the gaming world, along with reaching mainstream culture.
