Study to focus on polluted indoor air's impact on children

Study to focus on polluted indoor air's impact on children”

It's estimated that up to 2,000 people die prematurely in Greater Manchester each year due to air pollution, among 40,000 people nationally.

The UK city of Birmingham has announced that it pressing ahead with its Clean Air Zone plans.

Inhaling pollution raised their risk of health problems for youngsters including heart problems, asthma and potentially reducing the growth of their lungs.

The inquiry, involving the Environment Food and Rural Affairs, Environmental Audit, Health and Social Care, and Transport Committees, has published the Government response to their joint report on improving air quality today.

This will require any individual bus operating on a public local bus service, into the Clean Air Zone, five or more times per day to be ultra low emission bus standard.

One in every six buses operating in South Yorkshire uses the cleanest Euro VI low emission engines.

City of York Council is seeking views on the introduction of a new Clean Air Zone in York's city centre, to help tackle traffic pollution which can be harmful to people's health.

"It's been hugely rewarding to teach the pupils all about what affects air quality - we're seeing the next generation of environmental activists at work!"

The consultation will help to refine a package of measures that can be introduced to help mitigate the impact and support people to move to cleaner forms of transport.

Children are exposed to 30 per cent more air pollution than adults when walking to school because they are shorter, and nearer to exhaust fumes, a new report has found.

Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, said: "It's not an exaggeration to say that poor air quality is one of the biggest - and deadliest - challenges of the modern age".

Mrs Abrahams, who is MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, said: "It's important that we have better air quality so anyone living with health problems doesn't need to worry about dirty air damaging their health".

Clean Air Day is a chance to find out more about air pollution and to help make our environment cleaner for everyone, so there's no reason why kids can't get involved too. "We need to radically reduce the number of cars driving in and around Leeds and give people affordable and reliable public transport as well as safe walking and cycling routes across the city".

"We all have a part to play in ensuring that our children, their children and future generations to come enjoy longer, healthier lives because they have access to the clean air we are now denying ourselves".
