Kyle Larson Wins Back-to-Back Poles at Sonoma Raceway

Kyle Larson Wins Back-to-Back Poles at Sonoma Raceway”

Larson topped the charts for qualifying for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on Saturday afternoon (June 23) with a speed of 94.597 miles per hour. The Busch Pole Award was the California native's second of the season, his second at Sonoma and the sixth of his career.

He was happy to be on the pole again and said qualifying here is one of his "favorite things of the year".

Larson, who set the track record in 2015, corralled the hot lap by finessing through the hairpin turn before hitting the front stretch, appearing to not lose as much time as other drivers and edging Martin Truex Jr. for the top spot. "We were really fast in qualifying past year, obviously, with the pole", Larson said.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver has realized that dream. Schedule: Friday, practice, 2:40 and 5:40 p.m. (FS1); Saturday, qualifying, 2:45 p.m. (FS1); Sunday, race, 3 p.m., FS1 Track: Sonoma Raceway (road, 1.98 miles). "I just like the rhythm".

Larson isn't alone. Road course racing skills - such as the ability to turn right - are becoming more important in NASCAR.

"I feel like I've made some good progress on the road courses this year", Byron said after finishing third in the K&N race. Maybe I don't do a good job at it sometimes, but I enjoy racing all types of vehicles. So, I don't know, I just want fans to be fans of motorsports not just NASCAR and not just sprint cars. He has finished in the Top 10 in five of the last six races this season. "Off of Turn 4, I struggle".

Rodgers entered the first five-minute break at Lap 21 as the race leader over Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series regulars William Byron, Daniel Suarez and Aric Almirola. "But once you get through there after the first round it seems fine; you can kind of just forget about it in the second round and that's what I did". "This place is a beast, and so is that wine the first time you try it".

"We'd like to just get a little more consistent", Truex said. Kurt Busch has finished in the Top 10 in all but one of his starts at Sonoma since winning at the site in 2011. I can't say that I really gave away any time out there, which is tough to do on a tight little road course like this. "It's like they read it as if I said in two years from now, I wanted to do it".

Larson said the oil-absorbing substance was also on his mind as he started his laps in the first round.
