Snapdragon-Powered Laptops Could Soon Get a Big Boost

Snapdragon-Powered Laptops Could Soon Get a Big Boost”

Rumors about the existence of Snapdragon 1000 SoC had surfaced in the previous month. Now Qualcomm is reported to be working on a new chip intended for PCs from the ground up.

Now a job posting by aQualcomm engineer on LinkedIn (noticed by Winfuture.de) has confirmed that the processor is in testing for various Windows 10 on ARM applications, including desktop, Andromeda and HoloLens.

Maximum memory configurations tested with the Snapdragon 1000, still in development, include 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM and two 128GB UFS 2.1 disks. It also comes with gigabit LTE and Wi-Fi 802.11ad, along with a new power management controller.

What's slated to offer even more performance apparently, however, is something called the Snapdragon 1000, a chip that has been enjoying its time in the rumormill spotlight these past few days. This goes up directly against the Intel Y and U series of mobile CPUs, which both draw 4.5 watts and 15 watts respectively. So, there is a possibility that the Snapdragon 1000 may power thin-sized laptops with small form factor. The package size is reportedly 20 x 15mm, while an Intel processor belonging to the company's "U" series features a package size of 45 x 24mm.

This means the Snapdragon 1000 could be as big as Intel's processors, which would be an interesting change for Qualcomm. In other words, the SoC will not be soldered to the motherboard.

Arstechnica reports that the SDM1000 (known as the Snapdragon 1000) is a new SoC that was built with powering Windows 10 in mind. However, rumors surrounding the SD1000 suggest the US -based chip maker could be venturing a new territory of manufacturing swappable processors.
