Last-gasp Saudi Arabia goal sends Salah's Egypt home pointless

Last-gasp Saudi Arabia goal sends Salah's Egypt home pointless”

Saudi Arabia pulled off a last-gasp 2-1 win over Egypt as the two sides departed from Russian Federation on Monday, with the Saudis notching their first World Cup victory since 1994 and adding to the misery of Egypt's prolific striker Mohamed Salah.

That's because Egypt goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldes player to play in a World Cup at the age of 45.

El Hadary saved Fahad Al Muwallad's first-half penalty but Salem Al Dawsari scored a victor for Saudi Arabia in stoppage time.

The Colombian played against Japan at the 2014 World Cup, just three days after his 43 birthday.

The 45-year-old goalkeeper flew to his right to make a spectacular stop in the 39th minute from Fahad Al-Muwallad's spot-kick, awarded for handball, at the Volgograd Arena.

The 26-year-old Salah has ended the best season ever played by an Egyptian footballer collecting all individual titles in the Premier League after scoring 44 goals with Liverpool.

Hector Cuper's side lost their first Group A matches, to Uruguay and Russian Federation, and their preparation for their final game was shrouded in mystery after Mohamed Salah's name was originally omitted from their starting lineup.

"Obviously every player wants to set a record", El-Hadary said before the match and the sick save.

Mohamed Salah was on target once again but was unable to help Egypt avoid three losses from three Group A games following the 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia on Monday.

The Pharaohs carved out another opening as Salah turned provider to pick out Trezeguet, who sent a curling effort wide of the upright from close range.

It was an enthralling first half between the two teams from Group A who have already been eliminated.

Saudi Arabia fielded Yasser Al-Mosailem as the goalkeeper, meaning that the kingdom's three keepers will each have played one game in Russian Federation.

The Al-Taawoun captain is 179 days older than Belgium's Roberto Martinez, 413 days older than Serbia boss Mladen Krstajic and 1164 days older than Senegalese chief Aliou Cisse.
