Fantastic New View Of Ryugu Asteroid Reveals A Distinctly Dice-Like Shape

Fantastic New View Of Ryugu Asteroid Reveals A Distinctly Dice-Like Shape”

But JAXA, the Japanese space agency still scheduled to visit it with Hayabusa-2, utilized explosives to explode rubble off its surface, ladling recent asteroid dust and restitute its cargo successively to Earth after precipitating a handful of mini-rovers on the exterior of the asteroid.

'From a distance, Ryugu initially appeared round, then gradually turned into a square before becoming a attractive shape similar to fluorite - known as the "firefly stone" in Japanese, ' said Hayabusa Two project manager Dr Yuichi Tsuda. The agency plans to make three landings onto the surface of Ryugu over the next 18 months, collecting mineral samples and measuring surface conditions.

The robotic explorer will initially search for landing sites on the uneven hot surface but it will stay for only a few seconds each time it lands. However, he added there is also a "peak in the vicinity of the equator and a number of large craters, which makes the selection of the landing points both interesting and hard". But before the probe arrived at the asteroid in June 2018, scientists weren't sure what it actually looked like.

In fact, Japanese scientists are convinced that the 900-meter-wide (3,000 feet) asteroid, made up of leftover material from when our planets were first created, is chock-full of chemical compounds that may have ignited the spark of life on Earth. This means follow-up work after sample retrieval could provide further insight into the history of our Solar System and the bodies that first came to be. It will then attempt to land at or near the crater to collect underground material that was blown out of the crater, in addition to the surface material from the earlier touchdowns.

This computer graphics image provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) shows an asteroid and asteroid explorer Hayabusa2.

Hayabusa Two's approach has also allowed Jaxa to determine the asteroid's orbit is retrograde, meaning it spins in the opposite direction to the Sun and the Earth. The samples could also contain organic substances that may help explain the origins of life. The original Hayabusa endured a haphazard mission to the surface of the Itokawa asteroid in 2003.

The probe will observe the surface with its camera and sensing equipment but will also drop tiny MINERVA-II rover robots as well as a French-German landing package named Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) for surface observation.

Hayabusa, which is Japanese for "peregrine falcon", is due to return to Earth with its cache of samples in November 2020.

Samples obtained from Bennu are expected to return to Earth on the Osiris-Rex in 2023. Japan's JAXA space agency confirmed on Wednesday that the craft has taken up a position 12 miles off Ryugu. The protagonist in one Japanese legend calls Ryugu and travel back with precious cargo, a course that Hayabusa-2's generator wish to reproduce with more triumph than the indigenous Hayabusa mission.
