Google planning its own streaming video game console claim sources”

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo could have a new rival in the hardware business, if rumours about Google's video game plans are true. That's the word from five people who have either been briefed on Google's plans or heard about them secondhand. Google also has a lot of dropped initiatives that never seem to make it past the early stages. In 2014, the company was reportedly poised to acquire Twitch before Amazon swooped in.

There's also talk of integrating a somewhat fanciful integration with YouTube as well to help you get through some of the trickier parts of tougher games. In 2016, the Google-incubated studio Niantic scored one of the biggest gaming successes of the last decade with Pokémon Go, but it had spun out into an independent company the year before.

In recent months, Google hasn't quite been able to keep its moves under wraps.

At the Game Developers Conference in March, Google reps met with several major developers and publishers, reportedly looking to gauge interest in their streaming platform, code-named Yeti. First, there was the announcement that Netflix and Telltale would be teaming up to bring Minecraft: Story Mode to the streaming platform as its first playable title. The biggest advantage of streaming, as opposed to physical discs or downloads, is that it removes hardware barriers for games. Google Fiber would allow the company to control the traffic of its gaming service from its data center to the individual homes of users.

"Imagine playing The Witcher 3 within a tab on Google Chrome", one source familiar with the Yeti platform told Giz. This means you won't need to newest and most expensive hardware to play them at their best. But this isn't the first time we've heard Google wants to target gamers with products of its own. Do you think a service such as this could have a huge impact on gaming as we know it? Instead of busting out your laptop when you're facing a particularly hard boss, you could theoretically overlay a guide from YouTube with the simple press of a button. As the two transition into their cloud streaming services, there is no real victor yet, and it is fair game for Google to try and compete.

It's been an interesting few weeks for the games industry. "Our focus is on bringing console quality games that you see on TV or PC to any device", he said. Because of this, it's unclear whether Google's hardware would be positioned as a competitor to the next PlayStation and Xbox on a technical level or not. The company's history would be what discourages developers, and without developers, a platform dies, however good it may be. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony are now running the game with their Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch consoles, but Google refuses to be left out.
