Lengthy heat wave to follow heavy thunderstorms in Halton and southern Ontario”

"A persistent southwest flow is then forecast to develop, bringing hot and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico", the statement says.

Environment Canada says beginning Friday or Saturday and continuing through the Canada Day long weekend, expected daytime highs in the Barrie area will be in the low to mid-30s with humidex values into the mid-40s.

The national weather forecaster said it was not clear when there would be relief from the heat, and it would likely persist into next week.

The heaviest storms are expected Wednesday morning and early afternoon.

Montrealers won't even be able to get relief from the heat in the evenings as overnight low temperatures are only expected to fall into the low twenties.

A heat wave is usually defined as three consecutive days of temperatures in excess of 32 C.

It will be a hot and humid Canada's 151 birthday party in Ottawa.

"This will likely be the most significant heat event of the season thus far", said meteorologist Jill Maetea, who is based in Fredericton, N.B.

The agency adds that it remains unclear when the heat will break.

Southwestern Ontario is in for some rain, followed by extreme heat. Symptoms of heat stroke and heat exhaustion include a high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting and unconsciousness.

The Canada Day weekend promises to be a hot one, folks.

It is cooler down by the lake at Sugar Beach under the trees and umbrellas. The record for warmest Canada Day in Ottawa history is 36.7C, set in 1963.
