'Flying brain' blasts off on cargo ship toward space station

'Flying brain' blasts off on cargo ship toward space station”

According to NASA, it's SpaceX's 15th mission for commercial resupply services.

Cimon's human handlers promised the first AI space bot will behave itself and said there would be no mutinous takeovers like HAL from the 1968 film classic 2001: A Space Odyssey'.

The same first-stage booster launched the planet-hunting Tess satellite in April, while the capsule flew in 2016.

Once about the ISS, CIMON will essentially assist astronauts in a bunch of experiments, and will also be used as a "flying camera".

Both the capsule and the rocket have flown before.

CIMON was built in a joint partnership between IBM and Airbus, and the ESA will be the ones to test it out, but it could be a sign of even greater things to come. From there, it is scheduled to rendezvous with the ISS on July 2.

Manfred Jaumann, the head of microgravity payloads at Airbus, described CIMON as "a kind of flying brain". SpaceX, the popular space transportation company, has sent a robot CIMON (stands for Crew Interactive Mobile Companion) to the International Space Station (ISS) of NASA today.

"He's a friendly guy and he has this hard power-off button", German Space Agency physicist Christian Karrasch, the project manager, told The Associated Press on Thursday.

When Gerst calls to CIMON, the floating robot will acoustically sense where Gerst is calling from, orient itself that way, and zoom over.

For more than 17 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space.

The robot should be able to guide Gerst through various science procedures, showing videos or pictures as needed. Gerst can also ask CIMON questions about those experiments on which he will work.

The Dragon's 5,900 pounds of cargo will include Ecostress, developed in Pasadena at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which measures the temperature of plants to better understand how much water they need in space and how they respond to stress. Dragon separated from Falcon 9s second stage about nine minutes and thirty seconds after liftoff and is on its way to the International Space Station, now expected to arrive early on the morning of July 2nd.
