Heat warning issued for Leeds-Grenville

Heat warning issued for Leeds-Grenville”

Canada Day crowds in the capital will face the challenge of keeping hydrated in temperatures that are forecast to peak at 36 C, with a humidex of 47 and a UV index of 10, or "very high".

In Toronto, it could feel as hot as 45 C on Saturday, once the humidex is factored in.

Environment Canada is also warning the public about the sweltering temperatures, placing Hamilton and much of southern Ontario under a heat warning on Thursday afternoon.

It says people can find respite from the heat in seven cooling stations across the city with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s.

"This will be the most significant heat event in the past few years", said the national forecaster.

More information on how to stay cool can be found on the city's website.

"Uncertainty about when will the heat wave still persists".

In Ottawa, organizers are watching the weather to decide if the annual Canada Day show will take place on Sunday, Canada Day, July 1st.

The weather agency says there will be "little relief from the heat" with overnight lows in the low 20s.

Meantime, the weather agency has issued special weather statements for the eastern reaches of Quebec, as well as New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, preferably water and limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol.

The conditions have forced the City of Mississauga to issue an extended heat warning.

Environment Canada advises that there is still uncertainty regarding when the heat event will come to an end, as current indications suggest the heat could continue into the middle of next week.
