Immigration protests: Thousands rally to condemn Trump policies”

For the past several weeks, the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on undocumented immigrants - including the now-rescinded policy of separating children from their parents when they are apprehended at the Mexican border - has sparked an global outcry.

Organizers estimated 30,000 people had gathered in central Washington. They carried umbrellas, fans and water bottles.

More than 700 rallies are planned in cities across the country, including about 20 in the Bay Area, from San Francisco to San Jose, San Leandro, Alameda, Oakland, Concord and Morgan Hill. "It's been motivating for us as advocates because we have to keep going".

At the White House, crowds grew silent as loudspeakers blasted a recording of babies and children crying.

Over 500 protesters -including one Democratic lawmaker- were arrested inside the US Capitol this week in protest of the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration along the US-Mexico border.

U.S. authorities gave similar blankets to children they separated from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border. "I'm just shocked that family separation is something anyone would think of as a good policy move". So this is all of our fight.

Rita Montoya, 36, a Washington lawyer, was born in California but has Mexican origins and arrived at the protest with her two sons, aged four and two.

"We were ready to be arrested", she said. "Even some 17 years later, I still remember how it felt when I first cried out for my parents and they couldn't answer".

In Washington D.C., Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alicia Keys, and America Ferrera represented, but it was Orange is the New Black star Diane Guerrero whose story hit closest to home as she spoke from experience, sharing her story of separated from her parents when they were deported.

Organizers of Chicago's march, who also took to the streets in Pilsen and Little Village on Friday evening, said they expect their rally to be one of the largest in the country. "We're like mama bears with a cub, right?"

"I beg you all", she said.

Activist rally against the Trump administration's immigration policies on June 29, 2018 in New York City.

Before setting off on the march, Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels shared her thoughts on the president and the way his administration is treating immigrants. Elizabeth Warren of MA joined in solidarity with the protesters. "And reunify the children with their parents". Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) joined the women on the floor, linking her arms with theirs in solidarity.
