Trump says he is considering two women for Supreme Court”

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he will announce his choice to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on July 9, from a short list of candidates.

"The left is going to try very hard to say this is all about overturning Roe", said Johnnie Moore, a Southern Baptist minister who was a co-chairman of the Trump campaign's evangelical advisory board.

Ninety percent of Democrats said the vacancy would make them more likely to vote for a Democratic Senate candidate in the November 6 election, compared with 81 percent of Republicans who said the issue would make them more likely to vote for a Senate candidate from their party.

Having graduated first in her class at the Northwestern University School of Law, Larsen moved on to a lightning legal career: Deputy assistant attorney general under George W. Bush, justice of the Michigan Supreme Court from 2015 to 2017, and then USA appellate judge for the past two years.

"They're smart and tapped into the conservative legal community", he said.

If Trump is able to appoint a crucial fifth anti-woman justice to the Supreme Court, the fate of safe abortions for millions of women across the country will be jeopardized.

This is a developing story and will be updated. Asked if he planned to question potential court nominees their views on abortion rights and Roe v. Wade, he responded, "That's not a question I'll be asking".

It's widely expected the next appointee could shift the current balance of Supreme Court to a more conservative-learning bench. Two women are on his narrowed list, Trump said. He said we are not final because we are infallible, we are infallible what we are final. For millions of voters, Trump's pledge to nominate only anti-abortion jurists to the high court was all the reason they needed, and 81 percent of white evangelicals gave him their vote.

"I like them all", Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

The strategy mirrors one Mr Trump has been pursuing for appointments to the lower courts, where younger than normal judges have often been selected. Trump passed over Hardiman in favor of Neil Gorsuch, who has proven to be reliably conservative in his tenure so far and has been a key vote in numerous controversial 5-4 decisions, including the decision to uphold the president's travel ban.

"We have to pick one that's going to be there 40 years, 45 years", Trump said at a rally on Thursday. As a minority, court-watchers say, he might be an attractive prospect for some Democrats in the Senate to support. The vacancy sets up a bitter confirmation fight right before the midterm elections, where Republicans only have a single vote majority in the Senate.
