Temperatures to creep close to 100 during heat wave

Temperatures to creep close to 100 during heat wave”

Hot weather, especially long duration heat waves, is surprisingly high on the list of most risky types of weather in terms of injuries or deaths each year.

According to the NWS, the heat index values are projected in the mid to upper 90s today and up to 108 Sunday and Monday.

There may be scattered clouds this afternoon, but abundant sunshine will effectively add another 5 to 15-degrees to the heat indices, making conditions extremely risky.

A heat advisory is now in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday and an excessive heat warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday.

Our northern counties remain under an excessive heat warning (counties in magenta) until 8 pm Sunday, while our southern counties remain under a heat advisory (counties in orange) until 8 pm Sunday. Heat index values will soar into the 100s, with localized 105-degree heat-index values in urban areas of the Northeast.

Drink about a quart of water every hour while working or playing in the heat.

Never leave children, pets or disabled adults in a parked vehicle. "But the air mass is a little warmer today, pumping temperatures a little higher today than yesterday".

Clouds have exited the building! -for the most part- Heat and humidity, have not.

Heat stroke is a severe medical emergency.

Muscle cramping is usually the first sign of heat-related illnesses (heat exhaustion or heat stroke).

Stay in the shade to help keep cool.

Anyone who'll be working or otherwise spending time outside between now and Monday should take extra precautions.

Also, a must: wearing light-colored, light-weight clothing and drinking plenty of water. And when possible.reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

If you must work during the day, to reduce the risk of heatstroke while performing outdoor work the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places.
