Facebook to shut down 3 underused apps

Facebook to shut down 3 underused apps”

User data associated with the apps will be deleted within 90 days, the social network said in announcing the closures. At the time, tbh had 5 million downloads and 2.5 million daily active users.

Why it matters: Facebook is no stranger to experimentation and in the grand scheme of things, shutting down these apps probably won't cause much of a ripple.

The three apps being wound down include Hello, which Facebook launched in 2015 for Android users in the U.S., Brazil and Nigeria and which will be closed in a few weeks.

Facebook launched Hello in 2015 as a way for people using Android in Brazil, Nigeria and the USA to combine contact information on their phone with information from Facebook.

One of them, tbh, was an app aimed at teens that it acquired just eight months ago.

Tbh ("to be honest") was downloaded 5 million times in the USA in its first nine weeks, before being bought by Facebook for an undisclosed sum.

The app officially launched last August, and Facebook bought it for less than $100 million in October, according to TechCrunch.

Perhaps most notable is the shutdown of the fitness tracking Moves application, which Facebook acquired in April of 2014 as Apple's own push into health and fitness tracking picked up steam.

Let us know in the comments whether you're still using these services, or whether you've even heard of them before!

You'll no longer be able to log into Moves after July 30, but you can export your data to avoid losing your logs. But we need to prioritise our work so we don't spread ourselves too thin.

Next up is tbh, an anonymous social media app for teens in the US and which the company bought only a year ago. "And it's only by trial and error that we'll create great social experiences for people", the social networking and advertising giant said in its announcement. Like Moves, Android dialers are hardly difficult to come by, and the Facebook-branded version struggled to offer much more than what was readily available elsewhere.
