Lyft acquires Motivate, a bike-sharing company

Lyft acquires Motivate, a bike-sharing company”

The ride-hailing company has bought Motivate, the largest bike-rental operator in North America and the parent company of NYC's CitiBike and Chicago's Ford GoBike.

Car-hailing company Lyft has acquired Motivate, the company that runs Washington's Capital BikeShare, New York City's Citi Bike and bike-sharing programs in several other big cities, for an undisclosed sum. Motivate's collaborative approach with cities mirrors the way Lyft has historically worked with regulators and aligns with our strategic vision for bike share nationwide.

While Lyft will now own the infrastructure, Motivate said it will retain ownership of its operations business, which includes servicing, repairing, and "rebalancing" bikes-the term used for redistributing bikes from docks that are full at the end of the day to those that are empty. The company will introduce "Lyft Bikes", seizing on the momentum around dockless and pedal-assist e-bikes in major U.S. cities, and inject resources into the bike-share operator to expand those offerings around the country. At a June panel in New York, Jump CEO Ryan Rzepecki said Uber's team liked Jump's bikes so much after testing them out that one employee declared, "Fuck flying cars, this is the future".

"As part of this agreement, Lyft is acquiring Motivate's technology and corporate functions, including its city contracts", Lyft said in a statement shared with VentureBeat. Bike sharing and electric scooter activity should supply a fair amount of data that helps address this problem. The company has begun to experiment with electric bicycles.

VentureBeat has reached out to Lyft for additional comment on how plans to deploy electric scooters will benefit from the Motivate acquisition, but with existing relationships and real estate already being taken up by bike share racks in major cities across the country, it isn't hard to imagine the way people get around in cities to continue to change fast.
