This Week In Golf: Molinari Masterful In Quicken Loans National Win”

Francesco Molinari became the first Italian player to win a PGA Tour event since 1947 as he cruised to an eight shot victory at the Quicken Loans National on Sunday.

The masses were stirring as Woods took aim at the leaders, cutting his six-shot deficit at the start of the day to four with his third birdie on the front nine at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. The London resident, a five-time victor on the European Tour in 312 events, betters his previous best of T2 at the 2017 PGA Championship and is the first Italian-born victor on TOUR since 1947.

Tiger Woods shot 66 and tied for fourth at 11 under, his best finish in three months, though he never got closer than four shots.

He admitted it had been a gamble to then decide to miss the French Open at Le Golf National, venue for September's clash with the USA, to play in a PGA Tour event instead.

The cheers were so loud for Tiger Woods that no one could hear the starter announce the name of Joel Dahmen when it was his turn to hit.

Molinari's best finish on the PGA Tour prior to this week was a tie for second at the PGA Championship in 2017 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte.

Anirban Lahiri bounced back from a disappointing second round with a strong 5-under that took him to Tied-25 from after the third round of the Quicken Loans National.

Molinari joined the PGA Tour as a playing member in 2015 after turning professional in 2004, earning his European Tour card the next year.

Abraham Ancer heard it all in the group ahead, and it carried him into a share of the 54-hole lead.

Woods, who changed his putter this week, holed successive birdies from over 20 feet at the seventh and eighth as he achieved his second-best finish on tour this season.

"This entire week I've started the ball on line again and I'm starting to see it", he said.

Woods, whose 79 career US PGA victories are three shy of Sam Snead's all-time record, has not won a title since the 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational - a drought of 1,791 days in which 114 different rivals have taken victories.

Molinari also is going for his first official PGA Tour victory, though he won a World Golf Championship in Shanghai in 2010, which then was not recognized by the PGA Tour. Rickie Fowler finished 12th on eight-under-par. Molinaro is now among qualifiers for the Ryder Cup team, but his FedEx Cup standing is at No. 123. But I'm starting to hit some putts.

"It wasn't an easy decision, I thought until the last minute whether to go to France or to come here but seems like it was the right choice in the end".

"It's where I want to be", Molinari said, referring more to his position on the leaderboard than in heat approaching 100 degrees. "Even my good ones didn't look very good, so this was nice".

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Jerry Kelly squandered the lead, then regained it, and will head into the final day of the U.S. Senior Open with a one-shot advantage over David Toms.

"Those are things that I can't afford to do and expect to win a golf tournament", Woods said.
