Trump narrows list for Kennedy replacement; will announce pick July 9”

President Donald Trump plans to announce his pick to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on July 9.

Trump is moving quickly to fill the vacancy that will be created when Justice Anthony M. Kennedy retires from the court July 31.

Trump said Friday that his Supreme Court selection process would begin in earnest on Monday and that he would interview "six or seven" candidates in total.

"This will shift Roe v. Wade, whether it will mean that it will be overruled or undercut is another matter".

It will be his second Supreme Court pick, one that will give him an opportunity to cement the conservative majority on the nation's high court for years to come.

Whatever Trump said during his campaign, Leo said abortion did not come up in the president's interviews with prospective nominees when he chose Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago. He said he planned to interview one or two of them this weekend in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is spending time with family at his private golf course.

"We have to pick one that's going to be there 40 years, 45 years", Trump said at a rally on Thursday. Also of interest are Amul Thapar, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati, lives in Kentucky and is close to McConnell; Brett Kavanaugh, a former clerk for Kennedy who serves on the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C.; and Amy Coney Barrett, who serves on the federal appeals court in Chicago.

The president originally said he was considering a list of 25 candidates. "The way he puts it, is someone who is quote, 'not weak, '" Leo said.

Possible nominees being eyed include Thomas Hardiman, who serves alongside Trump's sister on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and Raymond Kethledge, a federal appeals court judge who clerked for Kennedy. He responded, "That's not a question I'll be asking".

A sign that the White House is also focusing on these Democrats: Sen. Trump welcomed Republicans Chuck Grassley, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Democrats Joe Manchin, Joe Donnelly and Heidi Heitkamp as part of the effort. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, was at the White House Thursday night for a meeting with Trump.

Hawkins noted that Kennedy has voted to uphold abortion rights in several cases, including the landmark 1992 ruling Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and more recently, in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, which overturned a Texas law that placed additional health regulations on clinics that perform abortions.

"I think the president's list is a very strong list". But he told reporters on Friday that he would not question potential high-court nominees about their views on abortion, saying it was "inappropriate to discuss".
