Gareth Southgate: England earned 'belief for generations' by breaking hoodoo

Gareth Southgate: England earned 'belief for generations' by breaking hoodoo”

The first: that Germany always reach the latter stages of worldwide tournaments.

Russian Federation 2018's round of 16 came to a dramatic end on Tuesday night, when England defeated Colombia on penalties, and as has been the theme throughout the tournament so far, there was not a single anti-climactic fixture.

Colombia missed one penalty and saw another saved in the shootout to go down 4-3 after forcing the game to extra time courtesy of a last-gasp equaliser by Yerry Mina that saw them level the scores at 1-1.

The opportunistic footy fans found themselves walking home from the All England Club in Wimbledon where, of course, there is a pretty big tennis tournament going on just now.

And while it is easy to say so in hindsight, there is good evidence that England may have actually held the cards in the shootout.

Some things - beating England to win a place in a World Cup semi-final, for example - are more important than politics, it emerged.

Even more so when Eric Dier's winning penalty went in and everyone in the country temporarily decided it was party time.

Before we move on to the quarter-finals - Uruguay vs France, Brazil vs Belgium, Sweden vs England and Russian Federation vs Croatia - let's look back at some of the memorable moments, shocking statistics and hilarious memes from the Round of 16.

OK, well, to recap - England are through to the quarter-finals on the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

In the 1990s they had one, Carlos Valderrama, now Colombia have six. Only 8 teams are remaining in the tournament.

Since 2010, Federation Internationale de Football Association has started to wipe off yellow cards, which the players receive after the quarter-finals.

The Colombia vs England game was a hard, physical contest, with many controversial moments and a ton of yellow cards. "We had total trust in their techniques".

This has certainly been a World Cup of viral memes and funnies.

His thoughts are turned already to the quarter-final in Samara against Sweden on Saturday, determined to capitalize on what captain Harry Kane spoke of as a sense of "huge belief" after getting the burden of English history "off our back". While England have shown invention from set piece situations, it's not sustainable to wholly rely on this as a source of goals.
