Hang onto your hat for a hot holiday weekend

Hang onto your hat for a hot holiday weekend”

Heatwave response: Families are being advised to take special care of the youngest and oldest members of the family during the next five straight days of heat and humidity Environment Canada is predicting.

There is still a heat warning in effect with the temperature at 31 C but feeling more like 41C with the humidity - but with Westernerly gust of 48 km/h according to Environment Canada.

A huge air mass travelling from the Gulf of Mexico has moved north and will be affecting eastern Canada, southern Ontario, Quebec, and even the Maritimes.

Humidex values reaching 43 are expected.

Humidex values will be in the mid 30s on Tuesday, and near 40 for Wednesday and Thursday. Overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low 20s, except high teens in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat.

As surprising as it sounds, no temperature records were broken over the long weekend in Southwestern Ontario.

It could be the hottest weather event of the season and because of the intensity of the weather situation, heat warnings are likely to be issued in the afternoons.

Extreme heat affects everyone, Environment Canada said.

The Salvation Army was out at Gore Park handing out bottles of water reminding people to heed the warnings and protect themselves, and police have already received a number of calls including one on Appleby Line and Upper Middle Road in Burlington where they rescued a dog from a hot vehicle where the temperature was 66 degrees.

There are many warning signs for heat illness, including swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.
