Mexico drug gangs: Will Amlo softer approach work?

Mexico drug gangs: Will Amlo softer approach work?”

"If Trump sends out an offensive tweet, I will take charge and answer him", said incoming Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, known as "AMLO", at a campaign rally in Oaxaca. The lawyer and economist is the candidate of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, which had been in power for 70 years until the election of Vicente Fox of the National Action Party in 2000.

Lopez Obrador launched his campaign in Ciudad Juarez in tribute to its namesake Benito Juarez, a 19th century Mexican president whose exiled government resisted a French colonialist intervention from the unruly city that borders El Paso, Texas.

Surveys conducted by Consulta Mitofsky and Televisa forecast gubernatorial wins for allies of the Morena party in Chiapas, Morelos, Tabasco and Veracruz, and for head of government in Mexico City.

Lopez Obrador, a 64-year-old former mayor of Mexico City, won a landslide election victory on Sunday, dealing a crushing blow to establishment parties and becoming the first leftist to win the Mexican presidency since one-party rule ended in 2000.

Mr Corbyn's trade union ally, Unite boss Len McCluskey, yesterday said he will never become prime minister unless he gets out of London and connects with traditional working-class supporters in industrial areas.

Haq said the U.N. chief "expresses the readiness of the United Nations to work with the new administration continuing a longstanding tradition of excellent cooperation between Mexico and the United Nations".

Relations between Trump and Lopez Obrador will be closely watched because Trump has regularly criticized Mexico.

Lopez Obrador has clashed with Mexico's business community, with some critics warning he would pursue Venezuela-style socialist policies that could wreck Latin America's second-largest economy. Indeed, AMLO has compared Trump's attacks on Mexicans to the way Hitler and the Nazis talked about Jews and called the American president "erratic and arrogant".

Lopez Obrador, who has run for president in every election since 2006, has humble beginnings, flies coach class and says that he will convert Mexico's presidential palace into a public park.

Claudia Sheinbaum of the "Juntos haremos historia" coalition party, gives her thumb up after casting her vote during the general elections in Mexico City, on July 1, 2018. In both of Lopez Obrador's previous two presidential losses he alleged fraud.

The morning after his crushing election victory, Mexico's president-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador thanked President Donald Trump for his congratulation message and said he'll contact the US leader to "reach an understanding".

The left-wing Lopez Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City, won more than half the election's votes on Sunday and will be inaugurated December 1.

Mexico's benchmark rate is at 7.75 percent - the highest rate among countries with investment-grade credit ratings, analysts noted.

Investors had been expecting a victory by Lopez Obrador, who had a longstanding lead in polls. Independent candidate Jaime Rodriguez had five percent.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has cast his vote in elections to choose his successor.

Lopez Obrador has repeatedly promised just that, though some businesspeople have been skeptical.

"We won't do the dirty work of any foreign government", AMLO said, referring to detentions of Central American migrants trying to reach the U.S. border.
