Europe rejects alliance with China to fight Trump on trade”

Washington and Beijing are making global headlines with threats over the prospect of a trade war, but they're also hurling indirect criticisms at each other on a more subtle front: Official travel warnings cautioning their respective citizens about the dangers associated with traveling from China to the US - or vice-versa.

Chinese state media has promoted the message that the European Union is on China's side.

The advisories, largely unreported in the USA and Chinese media, have circulated as friction over trade issues has risen between the two nations in recent months.

That raised concerns that Beijing, being 12 hours ahead of Washington, might actually strike first. "We won't do it and we have told them that".

"Frankly, I don't know what action China could take at the moment that would allow the U.S.to not impose tariffs", the USA source said, adding that there was no evidence the two governments had any substantive engagement at the moment that could lead to the shelving of duties.

"China and European countries are natural partners", it said.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said summit preparations were proceeding, and details would be announced in due course.

Bloomberg news reports that talks to avoid a trade war have stalled in part over U.S. demands that China reduce state support for high-tech industries.

China said Tuesday it's "fully prepared" for a trade war with the United States as hopes dwindle for a breakthrough in tensions this week between the world's two biggest economies.

Travel and Leisure magazine's report on the alert, meanwhile, noted that China has been warning its citizens about gun violence in the US for years.

"Public security in the United States is not good".

This is against a backdrop that Washington's first list of Chinese goods to be levied tariffs worth US$34 billion will come into effect this Friday, June 6.

China, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, Turkey, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Venezuela, Singapore, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Qatar, Thailand and India all echoed the same concerns and said they doubted the US tariffs were in line with WTO rules.

"Trump has split the West, and China is seeking to capitalize on that".

China's tactics were specifically created to hurt Trump supporters, he said.

China has promised to open up.

The United States has imposed tariffs on European steel and aluminum imports and is conducting another national security study that could lead to tariffs on imports of cars and auto parts.

"Whenever the train has left the station we are allowed to enter the platform", a Beijing-based European executive said.
