Mario Hezonja agrees to join New York Knicks for one season”

Players will be signed to short-term deals that will enable the Knicks to clear cap space for a max-level talent in 2019.

Former lottery pick Mario Hezonja will join the New York Knicks on a one-year, $6.5-million deal, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday.

But the 23-year-old will give the Knicks some depth at small forward as he looks to reignite his career.

With an eye on next summer instead, more moves like the minor one made over the weekend are par for the course.

In last year's offseason, the Magic opted not to pick up Hezonja's fourth-year option.

Hezonja will make an annual salary of $6.5 million, which is a bet on his talent as NY will continue to struggle in the Eastern Conference over the next few years.

The reason Hezonja ultimately chose to play for the Knicks was reportedly Fizdale-and a tweet that he posted later that night seemed to confirm as much. Sources indicated before free agency that Perry had reservations about Hezonja regarding a significant contract. The likes of Patrick Beverley, Spencer Dinwiddie, Tobias Harris, Khris Middleton, Terry Rozier, and Nikola Vucevic could also be available.

The problem is, of course, Hezonja was not going to sign with Portland.
