Canada's Building Trades Unions Stands with Trudeau Government on Misguided US Tariffs”

Trump has also tried to pressure Canada and Mexico into agreeing to rewrite the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement to shift more auto production and investment to the United States.

Now that Mexico's presidential election is done, Ottawa wants negotiations on the North America Free Trade Agreement to restart as soon as possible, one government official familiar with the plan said on condition of anonymity.

Ties between the two neighbors and long-time allies have been strained by U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on U.S. imports of steel and aluminum on national security grounds.

Talks between Mexico, Canada and the USA to renegotiate the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement began in August a year ago and are still underway.

If Canada is willing to drop all tariffs against the United States and its internal subsidies, the Trump administration has proposed to do the same. The Trudeau government has described Canada's retaliation as dollar-for-dollar, reciprocal tariffs that target steel, aluminum as well as a long list of consumer goods.

A fresh round of talks on the three-country pact will come with Canada and the USA locked in an unprecedented, cross-border trade fight.

The broadcast of the interview with Trump coincided with Canada's imposition of tariffs on select USA goods in retaliation for Washington's levies on Canadian steel and aluminum.

"Canada charges the US a 270% tariff on Dairy Products!"

"Canada, you're not going to get 275 per cent for your dairy and you're going to take down all your barriers", he said as an example.

The president has suggested he may pursue separate trade pacts with Canada and Mexico instead of continuing with a three-country deal.

The president's decision to push back the NAFTA talks comes as the US and Canada have been engaged in a tit-for-tat trade dispute over Trump's tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
