Pruitt's resignation finally ends his corrupt assault on human health, Pallone rails

Pruitt's resignation finally ends his corrupt assault on human health, Pallone rails”

Scott Pruitt, President Donald Trump's beleaguered Environmental Protection Agency administrator, resigned Thursday, the president announced on Twitter.

The senator praised Wheeler past year when he was nominated to the EPA deputy administrator post, saying, "there is no one more qualified than Andrew to help Scott Pruitt restore EPA to its proper size and scope". Pruitt's unprecedented pattern of constant scandals provided an eerie parallel to the president's more profane or mendacious tweets: any one or two would have been un-survivable in past administrations, but had become just part of the odd landscape of Washington under Trump.

Andrew Wheeler, the EPA's current deputy administrator, will take over as the organisation's acting head on Monday, Mr Trump said. He continued in that role through past year and lobbied the Trump Administration on behalf of Murray Energy even while being considered for the deputy administrator role at the EPA. The Washington Post reports top Pruitt aides have detailed further questionable spending and management decisions to congressional investigators. That quest included setting up a call with Chick-fil-A executives, in which he discussed her becoming a franchisee, as well as outreach to a conservative judicial group that eventually hired Marlyn Pruitt.

But at the same time, Pruitt was one of the most effective implementers of the President's agenda.

Pruitt has been buffeted by numerous revelations about extravagant spending, including $1,560 for a dozen fountain pens, $3,000 on "tactical pants" and "tactical polos", $43,000 on a soundproof phone booth for his office and $120,000 on a trip to Italy.

Later, Wheeler worked as a lobbyist representing Murray Energy and its CEO Robert Murray, a prominent Trump backer who denies the science of climate change.

Two Democratic lawmakers asked the EPA's inspector general on Thursday to investigate new allegations that Administrator Scott Pruitt falsified his official schedule to hide or remove records of meetings or discussions with industry representatives. "We must continue to fight the fossil-fuel entrenched interests that have gripped the EPA and want to undermine the public's health and progress on climate action".

Despite Pruitt's short tenure, he was able to have a big impact on environmental policy, rolling back protections from former President Barack Obama's tenure.

Pruitt's former deputy Andrew Wheeler has been put in temporary charge of the agency. Pruitt is the seventh person to leave a Cabinet-level post in the Trump administration. In April, after Oval Office remarks in which he lauded the EPA's work, he reportedly turned to Pruitt and said: "Knock it off".

Pruitt went on Fox News that day to defend his conduct, unapologetically calling his arrangement similar to an " Airbnb situation" where lodgers only pay for the nights they stay, and countering the criticism that renting from a energy lobbyist is a potential conflict. Mr. Pruitt was bad for the environment and bad for wildlife.
