Tropical Storm Beryl forms, expected to weaken before hitting Caribbean

Tropical Storm Beryl forms, expected to weaken before hitting Caribbean”

National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical depression forming in the Atlantic on Thursday that is predicted to become a Tropical Storm in the next 24 hours. The storm had sustained winds of 80 mph, and hurricane-force winds extend 10 miles from the center and tropical storm-force winds 35 miles from the center.

The storm is forecast to strengthen in coming days and could become a tropical storm Saturday night or Sunday, the hurricane center said Saturday morning.

The next tropical storm of the season will be named Beryl. Five to nine of those would become hurricanes, while only one to four could be major storms with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour.

Currently, the storm is 2140 km from the lesser Antilles. And even though it's expected to weaken prior to reaching the Leeward Islands, they won't be entirely out of the woods early next week. This system appears to be less organized, the center said, and the chances for a tropical depression to form are diminishing.

Even if the system degenerates into a tropical wave, as forecast, an uptick in shower activity, including some locally heavy rain, and gusty winds are expected in the Lesser Antilles Sunday into Monday.

We are also watching a cluster of storms just east of The Carolinas. It was expected to continue to move quickly west to northwest through the weekend.

A separate storm, Tropical Depression Three, formed off the Carolina coast Friday afternoon.

We are tracking 2 tropical systems in the Atlantic basin.

A major daily newspaper in the United States, the Washington Post, has reported the storm as "tiny and weak".

But the latest weather forecasts and hurricane models suggest the storm was not a taste of what it is to come this year, particularly after an incredibly devastating hurricane season last year.
