Ant-Man and the Wasp Gets Really Big Opening Weekend

Ant-Man and the Wasp Gets Really Big Opening Weekend”

Following the strong Thursday night box office, it was speculated Ant-Man 2 could open close to $100 million, as the $11.5 million was similar to Guardians of the Galaxy and higher than Doctor Strange, but if I had to guess, there was really no word-of-mouth promotion by general fans, so nobody rushed to see it at the theaters.

Also opening in limited release was Annapurna's Sorry to Bother You, which landed the best per screen average of the weekend with US$44,881.

This is intriguing, because in a movie landscape where doomsayers constantly predict the breaking point of superhero movie saturation is right around the corner, the masked and caped genre in general, and Marvel Studios in particular, have been doing much of the heavy lifting at the box office.

That was enough to give it the top spot at the United States box office, and make it the studio's 20th straight number one opening. Ant-Man and the Wasp had a worldwide opening of $161 million, including $85 million internationally this weekend. Future openings include a July 18 release in France followed by Germany (7/26), United Kingdom (8/2), Italy (8/14) and Japan (8/31). Things kicked off in February with Black Panther and continued on with the Infinity War installation, with each of those films bringing in nearly $700 million each at the domestic box office.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" recently charged past $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Universal and Blumhouse's "The First Purge" debuted on Independence Day, getting a head start on the weekend.

Elsewhere, Sony's Sicario: Day of the Soldado picked up another $7.3 million, taking the domestic tally to $35 million and rounding out the top 5.

Meanwhile, "Ocean's 8" stole another $7.7 million in 61 worldwide markets this weekend, for a global tally of $236.9 million. This is the fourth film in the Purge franchise, all of which have delivered strong domestic performances on very low budgets with 2016's The Purge: Election Year serving as the highest grossing of the lot, delivering just shy of $80 million.

It also speaks to audiences. It opens in the final key market, Japan, next weekend. Upcoming key markets include a July 20 release in Mexico, August 2 release in Russian Federation and a late, December 6 release in Brazil.
